What to wear to a Bar / Bat Mitzvah Pt. I

For any young Jewish, a bar / bat mitzvah is no dull affair. And the excitement of such happening in someone’s life and their family’s comes of course, with a proper celebration, a theme, invitation cards, a delicious kosher catering, emotional speeches and a very well thought dressed code that will make the event not only meaningful but also fabulous.

However, with all those themes going on and the ever-present need to impress your peers, the dress code can put a significant amount of stress on anyone. Whether the theme revolves around a medieval fantasy, an all-that-glitters unicorn extravaganza, black & white event or a glamazon soirée, it’s almost certain that you can find the perfect outfit in your wardrobe to attend the bar / bat mitzvah.

Regardless of the theme, there are rules that will always prevail. In most cases, the dresscode on the invitation will read something like casual, dress to impress, black tie optional or black tie only. In the first part of these two-part article you’ll find recommendations to dress for the less formal events. Below, you’ll find ideas that will help you look your best at that bar / bat mitzvah; regardless of theme and the venue:

• If the bar / bat mitzvah you’re attending is a casual affair that doesn’t mean you can show in your ripped jeans and a t-shirt. You must still look polished and put together, although slightly more comfortable than in an elegant cocktail event. Think of a fancy brunch or an afternoon posh cocktail.

Some bar / bat mitzvahs may take place out in the open, in gardens or similar facilities. To make things easier in this cases, women are recommended to skip the stilettos and choose dressy wedges instead. The casual dress code also allows for more functional pieces instead of a traditional dress.

You can opt for dressy trousers, leggings or jeans, a flowy, belted mini or midi dress in a beautiful and high quality fabric; or perhaps a metallic or lame mini skirt. Any of these items can be easily paired with some fancy wedges, sparkly flats or elegant oxford shoes. Accessorizing is always key and bringing something to cover yourself in case of any temperature lows can be very important. Try a textured blazer a bolero jacket or an embellished sweater to complement your look.

• If you’re supposed to dress-to-impress then you better live up to it. Nevertheless, this option offers flexibility like no other, although you’re still expected to look well-put together. Feel free to show off your personal style with your best Club Chic outfit, your favorite festive attire or a lovely party outfit that makes you look your best.

Play with your clothes, makeup and accessories to create an outfit that shows your style, personality and good taste with statement pieces and well-balanced combinations. From structured jackets to fur skirts and from textured embossed dresses to unique avant-garde shoes; adding your personal touch to your attire will be a fun way to express your personality.

Be daring and don’t be afraid to experiment. Luxurious fabrics and bold colors are not off the table. In fact, snakeskin, velvet and leather leggings can look amazing with a sheer blouse or a silky halter top. Sky-high heels, fancy leather dresses, luxurious culottes, chain belts, bandage dresses and bangle bracelets; these are all feasible choices for creating a unique and interesting look that will make you stand out from the crowd.
