The Bar and Bat Mitzvah industry is being disrupted by this rabbi

How can an LA rabbi change the bar and bat mitzvah industry? Well, the answer has probably something to do with a great sense of duty and dedication towards the community; and rabbi Moshe Cohen has lots of it.

In fact, he is so committed with his mission, that he ran the 2017 LA Marathon in order to raise funds that would cover the costs of unaffiliated families participating of the Community Shul’s Bar/Bat Mitzvah Experience.

With some bar and bat mitzvah parties reportedly being on the more expensive side of the spectrum, rabbi Cohen has developed a groundbreaking program that makes bar and bat mitzvahs affordable and more importantly, meaningful to all families.

It is said that bar or bat mitzvah have a long list of prerequisites such as private tutoring, membership to a synagogues and temple and several other preparations and training. However, that doesn’t mean that a bar / bat mitzvah has to cost a fortune.

That’s why rabbi Cohen developed a program called the Bar/Bat Mitzvah Experience, a service that offers families unaffiliated with a synagogue or temple the opportunity to provide their children with an authentic bar and bat mitzvah experience.

The programme launched this summer with the help of Rabbi Cohen’s community and a few Hollywood veterans. This programme is observed by Cohen himself and it consists of six sessions of one hour each, in which the teenagers are taught what it means to be a Jew, what is the Torah, what is the land of Israel and of course, what is a mitzvah.

Further, a partnership between the LA Museum of the Holocaust and the Community Shul has the mission of explaining young men and women about the difficult subject of the Holocaust. The programme costs are designed in a way they can be kept to a minimum and the families can hold the bar or bat mitzvah ceremony in their synagogue without paying for a membership.

In an open letter to the LA Times, Rabbi Cohen stated the following “Our Shul embraces those who want to celebrate a major Jewish life stage in a way that is meaningful and relevant for their entire family.”

Even if it’s true that decades ago, being an active member of the the Jewish community implied a steep sum of expenses, nowadays, there are several Jewish institutions and community programmes that allow Jewish groups and individuals to incorporate to the traditional Jewish lifestyle without breaking the bank. Rabbi Cohen’s Bar and Bat Mitzvah Project offers precisely that, the opportunity to afford a meaningful experience for Jewish families.
