How to take care of your image during the New Year’s Eve corporate party

If you’re planning on attending your company’s new year’s eve party, you might want to make sure to moderate yourself and avoid making any faux pas that may potentially be remembered during the better part of the upcoming year. This article contains a few tips that will help you successfully navigate your next corporate event.

  • Pick the right outfit.
Although it’s an event outside of the office, it still remains a work occasion. Try to have a coherent outfit that matches the image you project in your area of work. If your boss or co-workers are use to see you with a formal style, and that day you decide you want to show your “dark” and daring side, the perception people have about you it’s going to change in a negative way. Generally, try to carry a formal and sober outfit. For women this is especially important, mostly because you don’t want to be remembered as the co-worker with the prominent neckline or the tiny skirt that looks like a belt; avoid using an inappropriate outfit, because a work party simply isn’t right place. Choose your clothes with a couple of days in anticipation; be mindful and respectful of the dress code of the event.
  • Be careful with the alcohol.
Don’t drink too much, and if you know you are not the best at handling your liquor, try to avoid it altogether. Get your first drink after you’ve already eaten; whatever it is the food theme of the party, it will make lighter the effects of the alcohol. At most new year’s parties a lot of alcohol is poured. At first thought, it does not seem like a bad idea to take a couple of drinks and get “happy”; the only problem is that maybe the next day you will figure out that your behavior was everything but appropriate. Remember that the alcohol can trigger euphoria and weird behavior; when you exceed your alcohol intake level the best thing to do is to ask for a taxi back home.
  • Socialize with other areas.
Relax, enjoy and try to talk with all of your co-workers, but don’t forget to address the teams from other areas of the company, talk to the boss from other areas or a colleague with whom you have a work relationship but not much social interaction. Avoid at all cost to stand in a corner and talk to just one person. It’s true that the usual is to interact with our favorite co-workers, the people who we get along the most with or the ones that are part of our team. However, when we achieve solid professional bondings with members from other departments we build up cooperation.
  • Be careful with your boss.
In this relaxed atmosphere of celebration, you can reach out to your boss to express your good wishes, but is not the time to talk about the things you don’t like from work or to ask for a raise, this could be a serious mistake, so be careful with the way you interact with your boss. It doesn’t matter if it’s an integration party; to try and put down the barrier between employee and boss is not a good idea.
