Do’s and Don’ts of Planning the Perfect Event

If you’re ever planned an event, then you know how stressful that endeavor can be. There’s so much to think about, from the food to the music to the entertainment, and there are TONS of opportunities for things to go wrong. If you’ve been tasked with planning a wedding, bar mitzvah, retirement party, or any other major gathering, use the tips below to guide you and help ensure a successful event.

Do make lists and stay organized and on top of things. Disorganization and procrastination are an event coordinator’s worst enemy, and they can put your event’s success at serious risk.

Don’t assume that other people will like the same things you do. Consider your guest list, and try to plan for their needs, likes, and dislikes.

Do offer a variety of activity/entertainment options for people. Not everyone likes to do the same thing, so make sure there are a few choices available so people can choose how to spend their time.

Don’t forget to have all your vendors provide a detailed cost breakdown – in writing. Keep records of communications and other details that you can easily refer to if necessary.

Do promote your event. Invitations are great, but consider other forms of outreach as well, such as using social media or emails to remind people about the event and get them excited for it.

Don’t try to cut every corner on cost. Obviously there is nothing wrong with planning on a budget and wanting to save money, but there are some areas (such as food and drink) that are worth it to pay a bit more for better quality.

Do plan on something not going as intended, and have a backup plan in place.

Don’t try to please everyone. Not only is this impossible to do, you’ll drive yourself crazy in the process.

Do have fun! Just because  you’re the one coordinating the event, doesn’t mean  you can’t enjoy it like everyone else. Besides, after all your hard work, you deserve it!
