5 Classic Kid Games for Birthday Parties

    1. Musical Chairs The wonderful game that requires nothing more than music and enough chairs for each child. Remove one chair, start the music, and when it stops, all kids race to claim a chair.  The child who can’t sit is “out”, another chair is removed, and the game resumes until only one child remains.
    2. Dress-Up Relay Choose two outfits (the more articles involved in the outfits, the longer the game will last) that have an equal number of components. Place each in a pile at one end of the room.  Break the kids into two groups, and one member of each team must race to the pile, put on all of the clothing, return to the line, take it off, and allow the next person to dress in them.  This pattern continues until every child in the line has had a chance to dress up.  The first team to finish wins.

  1. Ball and Spoon Race Two ping pong balls, two spoons, and two teams of kids are needed for this game. The teams form two lines, with one child from each line carrying the ping pong ball on a spoon to a spot some distance away and then back to the line.  If the ball drops, the child must start again.  The first team to have all children complete the process successfully wins.
  2. Hot or ColdThe child who is “it” must leave the room or be blindfolded, while a coin is placed in possession of one of the others, who are all seated in a circle. The blindfold is removed, the child returns and must attempt to locate the coin within the group within a specified amount of time.  The other children in the circle give clues, saying hot or cold depending on how far he or she is from the coin.
  3. Cops and RobbersIn this game, kids are divided into two equal teams, the cops and the robbers. It is the job of the cops to arrest the robbers, which is done by tagging them.  These robbers are placed in the designated jail area, until the game ends or they are freed (tagged by a fellow robber).  The game ends when all of the robbers have been arrested.
